Maintaining Landscaping Mulch Throughout the Year
In addition to replenishing vital nutrients in the soil, discouraging weeds and protecting against water loss, adding mulch to your yard gives it an attractive color and textural interest. Mulch can be put down at any time of year. However, the best way to ensure consistent good coverage is to keep up with biannual reapplications in the spring and winter, with refreshing as needed during the summer.
Mulching in Mid to Late Spring
Putting down mulch in spring helps to restore nutrients and keep soil moist and warm. There’s no need to get started too early. A thick layer of new mulch will inhibit weeds, but it may also stunt new seedlings that you do want to grow. Waiting until mid to late spring gives plants a chance to get well established.
Touching Up in the Summer
Mulched plants do better in the summer months thanks to water and nutrient retention. In general, it’s a good idea to maintain a protective layer that’s about 2 to 3 inches deep. The hot summer sun weathers mulch quickly, so make sure to refresh as needed.
Applying Winter Mulch
Mulching in autumn is a great way to winterize your yard and protect it against the cold. Fresh mulch also helps to prevent erosion and retain nutrients that might otherwise be washed away. Warmer soil also means more beneficial microorganisms that promote healthy plant growth in the long term.
